Service Description
In this masterclass Verity will take you on a journey and guide you through processes that she uses in her own practice. Starting with initial ideas and inspiration you will explore drawing and choose a colour palette relevant to your subject matter. Working on slabs of clay as your canvas you will create texture and use decorating slips and underglazes to create dynamic and abstract monoprinted surfaces with depth. This advanced surface workshop will offer chance to explore qualities of line, develop your own mark making vocabulary and create surfaces that convey an abstract sense of your inspiration. www.verityhowardceramics.com We will start the workshop with drawing exercises on paper in order to learn more about our subject matter, think about line, mark making and to create abstracted drawings for the following processes. You will consider and choose a colour palette relevant to your subject matter. There will be time to explore creating texture on your clay slabs and brushwork with coloured slips. Verity will demonstrate how to monoprint drawings onto clay slabs using coloured slip, a process that is central to her practice. She will then help you to create your own monoprints and encourage you to explore the qualities of line that can be achieved when using this process. LUNCH Verity will teach an additional monoprinting process which involves using coloured slips to create prints from textured clay slabs. You will have time to try this technique yourself and explore how layering multiple processes can create depth of surface. Finally, Verity will show you how to monoprint onto a clay slab using underglaze, a process that enables a very fine line drawing to be created. You will then be able to test out this process yourself and create your own drawings on the clay’s surface. At the end of the day, you will have developed surfaces on a series of clay slabs that could be kept as tests for your future reference or turned into tiles or wall pieces. This masterclass will help in building your knowledge, skills and confidence and will guide you in developing your own unique voice through the abstract ceramic surface. DATE AND TIME: Saturday July 19th 1030-430pm Maximum participants: 10 Price includes materials, lunch, and four pieces fired
